Infinity Ward has gone back to their roots

Hold up! Don’t like reading? Watch instead…

With CoD Next over and the early access beta for PlayStation almost finished, we’ve now seen and heard Infinity Ward loud and clear. Their vision for the future of Modern Warfare 2 is… different.

And this might bother some of you, but I really like it.

I know it’s a poison word in the CoD community, but they’re making a more “tactical” Modern Warfare 2 and hopefully, they keep that energy for the sequels.

What’s more tactical?

The biggest change to Modern Warfare 2, movement has been nerfed. Very good.

In-game actions are now more intentional and because of that, there’s less running and gunning — don’t cry just yet though, I’ll tell you why it doesn’t matter for you sweats in a moment.

Infinity Ward has not only slowed down movement, but they’ve sewn that methodical philosophy into the perks system, equipment functionality, and weapon handling.

Heartbeat sensors now run out of battery.

Dead Silence is now a limited-duration field upgrade.

Except for 2 base perks, your full perk package now has to be earned on the battlefield.

The cost-benefit ratio for the No-Stock attachment seems to be dialed down — you don’t get as much of a buff to movement and aim down sight speed compared to Modern Warfare 2019.

In Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward is stripping away the speed of use & availability for mechanics that stray too far from the core gameplay of shooting and I love it.

Modern Warfare is now, dare I say, edging into the territory of “pop and shot” instead of “run and gun“. You can see that thinking reflected in Infinity Ward’s decisions with Warzone 2 and the now-confirmed DMZ Raid mode. Besides, Modern Warfare was never the fast Call of Duty — people seemed to have forgotten that. If you wanted the cracked-out experience in the past, Black Ops was your jam.

But don’t despair if you like sweating in casual, you’ll be glad to know that gamers have already discovered how to slide cancel.

In addition, you can always equip the Double Time perk to speed up your tactical sprint. And in combination with the Dead Silence field upgrade, you can bring some of that good old-fashioned Modern Warfare 2019 experience to the sequel — you just can’t spend the entire match emulating a 90s Quake III Arena tournament.

Conclusion

I think what Infinity Ward has here is absolutely the right direction for Modern Warfare. This beta and their CoD Next presentation have shown a more balanced approach to gameplay where killstreaks are hopefully rare, matches are tighter, and the majority of players are having fun.
