Is Infinity Ward Breaking Modern Warfare 2 On Purpose?

It’s about damn time…

It’s about damn time…

The word ‘balance’ has never been seriously associated with Modern Warfare.

But you know what’s surprising? The general attitude towards the Modern Warfare 2 beta so far has been hovering around the 50/50 mark. People hate it, people love it, but most people agree that the core gameplay is fun.

Most are begging Infinity Ward to ditch the SBMM, though.

Fat. Fucking. Chance.

SBMM aside, I think Infinity Ward is taking CoD seriously this time. It looks like their strategy for MW2 is to strip it down to its essentials, then build it from the ground up.

You can see this in their choices to slow the movement speed, neuter the perks system, and constrain running and gunning. Those three changes alone have laid the foundation for 3 distinct player behaviors to flourish on the battlefield.

It’s almost as if Infinity Ward has been taking notes from the top dog in balancing competitive FPS play at the moment, Apex Legends. With 18 distinct characters currently on its roster, Apex Legends does an amazing job of providing counters.

In Apex legends, there’s always an answer for any equipment, playstyles, or strategies in a given match. And that’s probably why it’s the number one battle royale bar none — when you lose, you know it was you who screwed up.

It looks like Infinity War is now on the same wavelength.

Rushers can equip Dead Silence, activate a UAV, and have their adrenaline-laced bouts of high-frag bliss.

And to counter, anti-rushers can take advantage of the low TTK, slower ADS speeds, and, arguably, some of the best map designs in the series.

Sentinels — let’s be real, ‘campers’ — can set up near known chokepoints and chill out to their hearts ‘content.

And to counter, anti-campers can use the new Drill Charges, Shock Sticks, or Stun Grenades that now absolutely slap compared to their 2019 version.

Stalkers, which are players that roam the map and adapt tactics, don’t have to worry about their gunfire constantly appearing on the minimap or getting shot in the back because of the reduced movement speed.

And to counter stalkers, you’ll have to adapt on the fly as well.

What Infinity Ward has done is simplify Modern Warfare 2 and that’s allowed all equipment and tactics to become useful again. Unlike Modern Warfare 2019 which devolved into flashbangs, semtex, and camping.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Infinity Ward introducing new equipment as Modern Warfare 2 evolves that solves gameplay issues or adds alternative engagement strategies ala Rainbow Six Siege.

Conclusion

I have a good feeling about where the team at Infinity Ward’s heads are at. They threw a lot at us in the beta and they said all the right things at CoD Next a few weeks ago.

Here’s hoping they stay open to community feedback and we get a resurgence of the good old Modern Warfare 2 ‘09 days.

Keep fragging and as always, stay cool, gentlemen.
